Notes: Simulated earnings values for 2008 and 2009 were both based on reported log 2008 earnings plus some random measurement error, which was drawn from a Normal distribution with mean zero and variance of 0.3. A change in earnings was then constructed directly from these simulated values. Finally, locally weighted regression was used to determine the predicted change in log earnings based on log real earnings in 2008. Upper and lower confidence intervals are shown as well.
